We’re excited to launch our new product IoT SIMS – SIM cards designed specifically for IoT devices.
IoT (Internet of Things) SIM cards offer several unique features and benefits for machine-to-machine communication, and we’ve created a handy guide covering everything you need to know.
What is an IoT SIM card?
These SIM cards connect IoT devices to any mobile network, enabling them to transmit and receive data over the internet. It gives organisations uninterrupted connectivity, but with total control of your entire mobile estate.
IoT devices can include sensors, meters, trackers, industrial equipment and much more.
An IoT SIM card can also be known as an M2M (Machine-to-Machine) SIM card or eSIM (embedded SIM) and is a specialised type of SIM card designed specifically for IoT devices.
Unlike traditional SIM cards used in smartphones, IoT SIM cards are optimised for machine-to-machine communication and are typically used in devices such as sensors, meters, trackers, and other IoT devices.
What features do they have?
- Private Static / Fixed IP as Standard . Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) provides Fixed Private IP addressing as standard.
- Simple Setup, Single APN and Remote Management – The IoT network allows customers to have a single Access Point Name (APN), irrespective of the underlying Mobile Network, simplifying device connections and enabling access to devices across a private network. When coupled with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to an IoT infrastructure, the devices become part of your own private managed network, without the cost and challenges associated with developing the infrastructure and managing mobile network relationships. They can be remotely managed and configured through cloud-based platforms, simplifying device management.
- SIM Form Factor & Activation. Standard SIM form factor available but alternatively, users can use a QR code to load the SIM into a compatible device.
- Network Access. All SIMs and devices have access to all UK networks with standard 5G data connection for optimal data transfer rates.
- eSIM Solution. Enabling over-the-air tariff, network changes and updates allowing SIMs to be used globally.
- IP Configuration. All IoT SIMs come with a Fixed Private IP with an option to overlay with a Fixed Public-facing IP if needed.
- SIM Management Platform. Users have access to a world-class SIM management platform, providing real-time visibility of all data usage and allowing users to set caps and receive alerts.
- Low Power Consumption. IoT devices often operate on battery power, so IoT SIM cards are optimised to minimise power consumption, extending the device’s battery life.
- Global Connectivity. Many IoT SIMs offer global coverage, allowing devices to connect to mobile networks worldwide, which is crucial for international deployments.
- Security. Built-in security features are incorporated such as authentication and encryption to ensure secure communication between devices and the cloud.
- Scalability. IoT SIM cards can scale to accommodate a large number of devices, making them suitable for both small-scale deployments and large-scale IoT projects.
- Customisation. They offer customisable solutions tailored to the specific needs of IoT applications, such as data plans optimised for low data consumption or high-bandwidth options for data-intensive applications.
